Wabi-sabi is a world view centred on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of appreciating beauty that is “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete”. How does this or can we apply this view to a painting? When is a piece finished? When should you stop painting and accept the little imperfections.

This portrait at first glance looks like a print. But a closer look reveals the remnants of brush strokes. Painted with diluted paint in order to maintain a smooth surface, it is possible to eliminate all traces of there ever having been a brush. Every strokes that is left now becomes a conscious choice. When do you stop? When is the work finished?
