From ambitious go-getter to caregiver and daughter once more. This work grew from the years surrounding my mother’s early-onset Alzheimer’s. My sister and I cared for her as long as we could, until the decision was made to move her to a care home. Within months, it felt as though the last fragments of her were fading.
In her final months, Czech was the only language she still understood. One day, I felt an urgent need to tell her that I loved her. She answered, “já tebe taky” – I love you too. I did not know, nor could I have known, these would be the last words we would ever speak.
After a year of mourning, I presented a single vessel: an urn large enough to hold us both. Because our story did not feel finished.
This work is an act of continuation. Of love extended beyond absence. Of living and creating in her name.
